Terrible performance with Radeon HD4250. Please help me.

Hello. I cannot seem to run any linux desktop well with this chip on a 880G chipset motherboard. My bios is flashed to latest. Gnome Shell 3.2 on elementary os/ubuntu 12.04/deepin 11.12 ran and still run on the comp without performance issues with no lag or problems whatsoever. However Unity's desktop effects are very laggy. KDE's desktop effects are choppy and stutter. But other desktops like e17 run well with OpenGl acceleration, tear free and vsync without problems. But I want to mainly run Gnome Shell. But I tried the new Ubuntu Gnome 12.10 and 13.04 but the newer Gnome versions seem to be laggy/choppy. However Gnome 3.2 is also installed on my comp and runs well. Does anyone use any Linux with this chip? Can anyone please confirm whether the choppiness in new Gnome Shell is an actual issue caused by regression or whether somethings wrong with my install? I'm using the open drivers on all my installs and radeon should be able to handle desktop effects no problem. And it did in Gnome 3.2. I don't care for games. The catalyst is not an option as it has sub-par performance but is too buggy. Is anyone using Radeon hd4250 without problems? Can anyone help? Could it be this is Ubuntu-specific? Linux is no fun if I can't run my fav desktops. Please help.

Direct render is enabled as glxinfo says. Other specs is AMD 965BE 3.4Ghz x4,4GBram (512vram shared), Gigabyte GA-880GM-d2h BIOS version FF.

choppiness means there is no 3d acceleration. You need to check the X logfiles, gdm logfiles to see what's going on.

But accel is enabled. It even says so in Xorg log (attached) and glxinfo says direct render is enabled

direct rendering: Yes
OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on AMD RS880
GL_NV_conditional_render, GL_AMD_conservative_depth,
OpenGL vendor string: X.Org
OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on AMD RS880
OpenGL version string: 2.1 Mesa 9.0
OpenGL shading language version string: 1.30
OpenGL extensions:
--------------------------------------------

I'm not sure what gdm logs exactly. That's the problem. Accel is enabled but still choppy performance with sticky desktop effects!

gdm logfiles are located in /var/log/gdm3 if I remember well and if you have gdm installed

There are some files in /var/log/gdm. Some are named :0-log :1-log, etc. but they seem to be copies/backups of Xorg log. There is :1-greeter log which I'm attaching in next post (have to change permissions on it). I can't make anything significant out in it. Anyway, I'm using 3.2 on eOS right now and it's zipping away smoothly. I also tried ROSA Gnome edition which has 3.6 but that had jerkiness also, so the problem might not be Buntu-specific. (I checked direct render each time and it's enabled) I also ran it from USB drive but it was jerky in that also, so we can rule out SATA disk issues. I also tried EXA acceleration in Xorg conf, but the issue is still the same. Any help appreciated!

I'm also attaching full glxinfo output from two installations.
One has elementaryOS with Gnome 3.2 installed and it's smooth and good.
One has Ubuntu 13.04 with Gnome 3.8, terrible performance.
I'm not too well-versed with Linux, but I can post any outputs if needed. Please help me!!

something similar happened to me, and in my case that was a rendering problem. I solved it by reinstalling the ati proprietary driver. You can look also errors in the gnome logs. I have got some very strange error messages like this or that could not be started and the final reason was the acceleration.
