teaching shell scripting: cool scripting examples?

Hi everybody,

I'm going to teach on a linux lesson where I will explain how to use bash as scripting language. So I'm looking for some useful scripts to use as example after the teorical lesson. I mean something of useful and cool which should demostrate the power of bash scripting for normal windows users.

I only thinked about resizing a set of images in a folder (e.g. generating thumbnails).

Does someone has other ideas?

Thanks

look in advanced bash scripting
there is a thread tips (including many one liner bash) somewhere in LQ
sed one liner

any of the service script?
The world is your oyster

Look into bash tutorials (see LQ bookmarks)

I suppose you need a script simple enough yet powerfull,
but then it all depends what your students are interested by...

Feedback on what worked with the Woah! factor would be interesting

grep with some colors

there are tutorials for awk out there with email list management

The question is what will impress your students...
