You don't 'mount' tapes, you normally just access the device directly using tar (or whatever tool you want).

What type of drive is it?

cheers

Check the man pages for tar. Lots of help via searching the web.
/dev/st0 (rewind tape on process completion)
/dev/nst0 (no rewind tape on process completion)

tar -cvf /dev/st0 /home/oracle/file.txt

My system admin is in the process of purchasing a LTO tape drive. Just wondering if you had any problems and what do you think of the drive.

Look at www.freshmeat.net for other backup solutions

Use the mt utility to command the drive to end of data.
Using /dev/nst0 will not rewind tape upon completion of tape command.
http://linux.about.com/library/cmd/blcmdl1_mt.htm

To restore data
Navigate to desired directory.
tar -xvf /dev/st0
