system unable to resume from standby

Hi all.

This is my first attempt to post in a forum so do bear with my poor manners and give me your guidance.

I've installed a Ubuntu 5.10 with Gnome, on an IBM desktop. Whenever I leave the desktop running overnight or say, 8-10 hours untouched, the system will refuse to response to any mouse clicks or keyboard interaction. Even if it sometimes does, it is very very very slow. In either case, I'm forced to do a hard reset.

Can anyone help? Appreciate your pointers.

Regards

What hardware are you running on your computer, and this is a desktop not a laptop, correct? What exactly happens on screen - does it display the desktop and simply not respond, does the monitor just stay in standby, etc?

I'd almost bet it's the BIOS and OS fighting over who gets do power managment.
I've seen this kind of thing in both Windows and Linux before, especially if the computer is an older one.

I'd suggest booting into the BIOS (usally you hit either DEL or F10, or whatever it says on the screen just after you turn the computer on) and disabling any and all power management features, then setting the OS to control power management, or, if that doesn't work, try it the other way around, or just disable and and all power managment features altogther.

Hi Guys, thanks for your input.

fouldsy: you're right. It's a desktop/workstation and not a laptop. Does this really matter or may contribute to the problem?

Yoda47: I guess you're not a Newbie When i read your post, it really struck my mind to say "Why didn't I think of that!"

But heh people, thats the power of sharing and open-source, isn't it?

Wishing all a great weekend ahead. I'll be posting the result of disabling APM on BIOS to keep all updated.
