I'm not too sure, but I think it might depend a lot on the system you have been using, and the system you are going to use.... post those details and people will be able to help you out a little easier.

I know that different flavors of linux save the password in different places....

I'm thinking that the home directories should be a sinch... as long as you have all of that on a seperate partition.

I think that most of that will be the same. the file /etc/passwd stores uid and all that.... here's a clip from mine:

adam:x:1001:100::/home/adam:/bin/bash

that's username, x means there's a password, UID, GID, home dir, login shell

and group definitions are in /etc/group this is from the man page:

group_nameasswd:GID:user_list

If you're using the same shell, then .profile should stay the same.

I was thinking about this today.... I think everything will be cool except for the passwords. You might need to to go through and set each user's password from root (maybe you could make a bash script to do that for you), and then have all of the users login and set a new password.

you might even want to make a backup of everything in /etc so that you can look info up if needed.

... just my thoughts on the subject....

good luck
