system/linux programming

Hi:

I am kinda like a beyond-beginner programmer: I mean I know how to do many datastructure, how to do some machine and all (all learn in completing all the lower-division CS course in college, but never continued in to upper). Now I am really interesting in learning how modern OS works and maybe learning how to program some system tweeker (that's just how I like to call it). Wonder if people can recommend books on OS or the linux kernel, etc...

Well, i think the best book that explains how an os works is a vintage 'Modern Operating Systems' by Andrew S.Tanenbaum(the MInix guy),though it is quite outdated.
