hi everybody out there
yesterday i witnessed my system crash for the after a long timei dop not know whether it was a filesystem crash or what.i had shutdown my system properly but when i started it next time X server won't start and it kept on trying and tring giving messages as 65580 wanted but 63232 found etc
etc.after that reboting it checked my hardisk for any errors and it gaves error such as
inode prolems which it fixed.
then it asked to perform maintainence tasks which i do not know what do do.
so itried 'e2fsck' and 'badblocks /dev/hda' on my linux partition but of no use.
i have although installed my linux once again, but whatt should i do in future to prevent such crashes and recover them

if it was cuse of the fs i say switch to a better one (i had problems with ext2 (i thought i made it 3) with curupt files, and all these bad things, so i moved to reiserfs earlyer then i was planing (i wanted the extra space later :) ) and besides a few problems with improper shutdowns that can erase the lchanges i made to the last file i modifyed, there hasent been the sligtest problem

How much free space do you have on your partitions?

You might want to make sure that you harddrive is not failing before reinstalling the os. Check for any smart errors or use the a vendor supplied utility. Filesystems do get currupt, but it is usually caused by unexpected shutdowns or hardware failures.

i am having around 600 mb of free space on my linux ext3 partition

I'm thinking with grod here, maybe it's a faulty piece of hardware.
