syncing 2 installations

Hi there,

I was wondering if anyone knows of a good way to automate syncing between two computers on a network. I have a laptop and desktop that are on on the same network, and I'd like to put the same files on both. Is this best done with a script, or is there software available for doing this?

It would also be nice to be able to keep a list of installed applications, both from apt and things I have installed on my own. I'm not too could at bash scripting, so I was hoping there might be an easier way..

cheers,
rich

I use rsync but, you might want to look at rdist and unison
Code:

smart info rdist

Name: rdist
Version: 1:6.1.5-44@i386
Priority: 0
Group: Applications/System
Installed Size: 161.8kB
Reference URLs:
Flags:
Channels: Fedora Core - Development
Summary: Maintains identical copies of files on multiple machines.
Description:
The RDist program maintains identical copies of files on multiple
hosts. If possible, RDist will preserve the owner, group, mode and
mtime of files and it can update programs that are executing.
 .
Install rdist if you need to maintain identical copies of files on
 multiple hosts.

smart info unison

Name: unison
Version: 2.13.16-3.fc6@i386
Priority: 0
Group: Applications/File
Installed Size: 2.2MB
Reference URLs:
Flags:
Channels: Fedora Extras - Development Tree
Summary: File-synchronization tool
Description:
Unison is a file-synchronization tool. It allows two replicas of a
collection of files and directories to be stored on different hosts
(or different disks on the same host), modified separately, and then
brought up to date by propagating the changes in each replica to the
 other.
