Welcome to LQ. It's difficult to offer advice without more info. What distro are you running, what is the make/model of your equipment, and have you confirmed that your monitor in fact is capable of running the resolution you want?

Im running redhat es, i wouldn't know how to find the model number, and i know my moniter is only capable of running 1024*768 and lower under windows. Now i know this is the same for linux.

There must be some sort of logo or sticker or something that indicates who manufactured your monitor, and there almost always is some kind of indication as to the model number. Along those lines, is this for a desktop, or a laptop? Unfortunately, it's next to impossible to offer any specific advice when the only information that's available is just that there's an issue with adjusting the resolution

If you used the graphical tool to change the the resolution, there is a simple solution to your problem. When entering in graphical interface an the monitor says Sync out of range press: CTRL+ALT+- so control alt and the minus sign. It will select a lower resolution for your desktop so you will have back the graphical interface.
Next you can use the same tool to set back the proper resolution.
Hope it helps.
