I'm running Redhat 9 and KDE. When I was using GNOME I could go to a terminal, su to root, and type 'init 3' to change to runlevel 3 and when I'm done go back to 5 with the same sommand.
Doesn't seem to work in KDE. Is there command that works in this environment or will I have to edit inittab every time I need to change runlevel?
Bah, I'm probably going to switch back to Gnome. KDE is too inconvenient for a lot of things (gotta log out before you can reboot, or shut down, most screensavers don't work, gotta click my windows partition icon to have it really mounted, and some other things)
What was the error given if any? I mean you should be able to do it while in X but I always dropped to a console before using such commands... just a habit of mine I suppose.
Try telinit 3 as root after logging in at the command line which is presented when you press Ctrl+Alt+F1
Use telinit 5 and then Ctrl+Alt+F7 to get back to gui iirc.
i use init 3 with root no problem how about starting a konsole, su then init 3? i never used telinit coz init works just fine for me. (in kde, icewm and gnome)
