Switching Runlevels without editing inittab?

I'm running Redhat 9 and KDE. When I was using GNOME I could go to a terminal, su to root, and type 'init 3' to change to runlevel 3 and when I'm done go back to 5 with the same sommand.

Doesn't seem to work in KDE. Is there command that works in this environment or will I have to edit inittab every time I need to change runlevel?

You shouldn't change your runlevel while in X, log out of X and try running the command on the console or command line.

I could do it from X with Gnome ...

Bah, I'm probably going to switch back to Gnome. KDE is too inconvenient for a lot of things (gotta log out before you can reboot, or shut down, most screensavers don't work, gotta click my windows partition icon to have it really mounted, and some other things)

What was the error given if any? I mean you should be able to do it while in X but I always dropped to a console before using such commands... just a habit of mine I suppose.

What is the risk if you issue that command from X?

I used to do it from KDE (hardly use Gnome) when I was booting in runlevel 5 (I've since switched back to 3 tho) and shutting down X was awkward...

you might want to try /sbin/init 3 and I think you have to run it as root. I run this from kde every now and then with no probs.

Try telinit 3 as root after logging in at the command line which is presented when you press Ctrl+Alt+F1
Use telinit 5 and then Ctrl+Alt+F7 to get back to gui iirc.

The man pages explain telinit's just a link to init
