Suse linux moving slow (2 year old install)
 

After more than 2 years of it moving great, Suse is finally starting to show signs of it needing a reformatting.
It's true I haven't done any maintenance work on it ever since I installed it, it always worked perfect.
Now, it's moving slow (talking a long time to boot, it takes about 1min until it loads firefox or opera, you get the idea).
On a fresh install of Slackware Linux, it moves ok, so it's not from the hardware...
Can I still do something to make it run better? I was thinking of installing an anti-virus on Slack and checking it, maybe also a rootkit hunter(although I doubt it is necessary), deleting all unnecesary files to free up space (it's currently 9/10 Gb full)... and that's about all I can think of...

I think, that firstly you should find out what is wrong:

1. Check what exactly makes your computer to work slowly, check the processes, and figure out that there are no processes, that are using too much resources.

2. Check network statistics, when using no browsers and network services with netstat.

3. Check whether your filesystem doesn't require defragmentation.

4. Just create new user and login to see if there are some problems with your user.

5. Uninstall everything, u don't need.

One more question: how do I defragment it? It's a ReiserFS formatted partition. (that is probably it, as I copied, installed, uninstalled and deleted a lot from it)
1. I don't remember seeing any memory-consuming process, but I'll monitor it more closely.
2. There seem to be no other internet connections except for the ones I initiate.

there is no need to defregment Reiser file system, because it's defragmenting itself, i thing now u should just create new user and try to use it, and write how was the experiment :)

Do you mean that in 2 years you have never updated any of the software via YaST?? That's a security issue all by itself, but you might try running an update to see if that improves performance. Personally, I would recommend running YaST to check for new versions/patches at least once a month. It doesn't take much time, and it keeps your machine up to date

yup, I'll do this tomorrow... It's too late now and I'm too sleepy :)

No, I did upgrade with Yast every few days. I did take some security measures :) . Also I have closed all the programs I don't need running, and done every security tip I could find and understand on the forum or tutorials.
By maintenance work I mean virus scanning, deleting unneeded files (I once had a 2 GB /tmp, but I cleaned that up :D ) and stuff like that.
