SuSE 9.1 Pro install freezes Activating USB devices
 

Has anyone else had this problem? SuSE 9.0 was wonderful for me and my hardware, but I've now got a $69.00 9.1 update install that won't run beyond "Activating USB Devices . . .". I've emailed install support, but I'm sure it will be days before I hear from them.

there is a reason its called a clean install. I'd suggest backing up all your stuff on cds and testing that out.

I'm quite willing to do a clean install, but I can't get that far in the install process. It stalls before the installation process begins.

Where exactly is it stalling? when checking USB devices again? Are you 100% sure its not a mem issue? Try out the memory test on cd1 when you boot using it.

My first question would be, have you unplugged your USB devices before doing the install? Or, rather, do you have any plugged-in in the first place? Better to skip the configuration now and get the install over with, then do the configs once the install is complete. At least that way it's a little easier to determine which is the offender.

When I installed SuSE 9.1 it took forever detecting my USB devices before the install began, but eventually it got on with installing. It does have problems if I plug my USB pen drive in tho, it gets stuck at that part, so perhaps it's just one of your devices causing a problem

What's forever, Dave? When I boot from the DVD I choose Installation and verbose, it starts loading the linux kernel and about 30 seconds after that it stops at "Activating USB devices . . .". I have let it set for as long as 10 minutes--there's no harddrive activity, the DVD spins down, and it just stops. I haven't even seen the beginning of the install or any configuration screens. I have a USB keyboard and mouse that SuSE 9.0 accepted without problems. I'm going to try an install today on my laptop with no USB devices and see what happens.

Forever was probably about 15 mins.

As you may have gathered there are a number of issues with SuSE 9.1 and USB - unfortunately not limited to merely installation. I would recommend removing all non-essential USB devices while conducting the install and then configuring them.

i also had the same problem. try deactivating usb 2.0 in your bios. you mustnt deactivate usb completly but set it to usb 1.1 . now your computer should act as if its only got usb 1.1 and not usb 2.0. now you should be able to install suse 9.1 and after the installation you can change back to usb 2.0.

Thanks, pitr, I'll make a note of that for future reference. I finally was able to install by borrowing and using a PS/2 keyboard for the install--after waiting 45 minutes at one point I decided 9.1 was never going to activate my usb keyboard. If (or more likely when) I install again, I'm going to try your usb 1.1 suggestion. Thanks to all for the suggestions.

you must install it whitout usb devices attached and upgrade the kernel

I also have an HP d530 and had this exact same problem. If you unplug your keyboard and mouse it should work for you. Just wait till the half way point on the SuSE install and then plug in your usb keyboard and mouse then it should work just fine.

I did this with out using the suggestion above. However perhaps setting the usb to 1.1 instead of 2.0 probably would work also.

Again this is the same with the DVD or the First CD. Its almost as if it has issues loading the 2.0 usb driver, and having a usb keyboard or mouse connected durring the process.

I have the same problem with suse 9.1 personal.
I unplugged all my USB devices (a printer and a modem) and then tried to install suse.. and nothing had changed!!
Well how can i change the USB 2.0 to 1.1 in the bios?

I've managed to install SUSE 9.1 over ftp with my USB printer/scanner attached. It also works if I switch on the device before booting up. However, everything freezes if I switch on the printer after bootup.
