Question SUSE 7.1 not responding to '1s' command?

Hi all,
Er... i have just installed SUSE 7.1 (first time i've tried any version of Linux and was given this to try) and i was unable to set up any graphical interface during install as it didn't recognise my graphics card(Geforce4MMX64mbDDR). Anyway when i boot up and log in as root or 'user' account and enter the '1s' command i get this reply:

bash: command not found

is this correct? i was under the impression that this command should show me the contents of the current directory?
Apologies for the noobness of my question but i am an 'Ultra noob!'

Thank you for your time
