The site should be tolerant of any opinion a given person has

Ahhh.. here we go. Well this site is a hobby for me, but I hobby that as you can tell I take very seriously. The target machine I am aiming for is probably about a 1GHz machine (although duals) so processing power is not the sole issue. Server class has much more to do with reliablity than speed. I do not want the site to be down for eight hours because a $4 fan went and something overheated. Am I freeloading? I don't see how. I offer this site 100% free of charge at a fair personal cost to me both in terms of time and real money. There are MANY new features I want to add and many things I want to do with this site. Once we get the new machine I do not want to worry about hardware for another 2 years - it just wastes time and enerygy. I am the kind of person that does something right the first time. I really do think this is by far the best Linux forum around - I intend to keep it that way.

Oh, Jeremy got in first. This was intended for Sickboy.
</edit>

Well, I agree to some extent. This site should be open to opinions, but not necessarily of a personal nature. I understand that your initial post seemed a little harsher than was intended, and I appologise if I came across as very retaliatory; bad luck on the ISP trawling your site's name, it's a nasty thing to do but it seems to be increasing. Jeremy may not have done huge amound for Linux, but we are part of the Linux community, and I think that Jeremy has done us a great service by providing this space.

I see where you're coming from on the turning down of Gig boxes, but Jeremy has obviously thought this through. Surely it is easier to 'save up' and get a bloody great server class, rather than have lots of comparitively little boxes lying around doing their bit. I would have thought that it would be easier to expand upon a server class machine at a much later date than to keep having to expand here, there and everywhere on the little machines.

Just wanted to add a few quick things.

1) I think I have kept this site very open to all kinds of opinions, even those those vary widely from mine. The only opinions that are not tolerated here are ones that are personal attacks or a derogatory.
2) By server class I am not talking Sun Fire 15K. I am talking about quality parts that were manufactured to take the 24/7 beating that being a server entails. Consumer stuff was just not built with this in mind.

Allow me to add my two sense about this site. First off, I would like to say that Thymox when you say these boards are some of the best on the net, you are dead on. I would like to say thank you to...

1.) those of you who sacrifice your time and money to keep this thing going. I know what it is like to keep side projects running and still stay sane (even if I am just a newbie to the world of hardcore computer work.) This site has given me tons of information about just about anything I could ever want in order to get linux up and running and then attempt to do the things I want to do.

2.) I would also like to thank everyone who takes the time to respond to my idiotic questions that I am sure some of you guys think that I have some serious issues for asking. That also is a devotion of your time to something that many may think is a waste of time, but thank you for being here to answer my questions.

If I weren't a broke college student I would be dropping some cash right here to help you guys get a new server, but alas, not only am I broke, but I am ugly too... that's how bad it is.

Umm.. we might be mods but we don't have the go ahead to accept hardware from members or anyone willing to offer it. But if bkeating wants to send that my way I'll make some use of it..
I think this is getting out of hand as well Sickboy. Your comments are harsh in a way that seem unreasonable and your pre-judging someone just because they turned down an offer. Jeremy is looking at long term, not short term. This site is growing and only getting bigger, why not look forward to getting a machine that will last probably not just for a few months or a few years but even longer. There is nothing wrong with that.
I think your the only member out of the 10,000+ who has reacted in a negative way just because the owner of the site wants quality for a site he gives back to the community.

And lets keep it clean, so I don't have to close this thread.
That's all I have to say.

Getting out of hand? It think it already is...

I think that Jeremy does an awesome job of this maintaining this site. He spends quite a bit of his own money and resources to keep it going, and he gets good help in the form of moderators. Frankly, if it were not for this site, myself and several others I know would be lost and may have given up on Linux entirely.

Your statement previously about him being a freeloader and basically demeaning him is rude, mean, and quite honestly, intolerable behaviour towards a man who does this for the entire Linux community without requiring anything back. He is only asking for help from those that appreciate the value this site brings. It is no different than freeware. If you like the software, the developer does not require you to pay, but would appricate it.

I have read some of your other posts, and you seem to like starting fights.. even ones that have no real point. You are an ungrateful and rude little person. I like the tolerance they have when it comes to posting comments and opinions, but yours go way overboard. You deserve to be slapped.

WIth the exception of SICKBOY, sorry if I offended anyone else.

I downloaded the ISO's of RH 7.3 to see how it is, and I like it.

I'll be buying it next check, it's amazing how many of my friends download it and never buy their distro of choice.

*good thread idea*

Man, gotta love the drama. Anyway, I once bought a "downloadable" copy of Mandrake. Actually that was my first Linux Distro. It introduced me to Linux.

Mandy 7.1 Cost me 2 bucks (US) and 2 for shipping.

Am waiting for Mandy 9 or 10 and then I am gonna fork over the real dough (hope it's not more than $100) and get the full package.

Im thinking about buying another mandrake 8.2 package. After using a few others, I really enjoy the simplicity, gets things done fast.

Wonder if they re-packaged mandy 8.2 with kde3....
