indeed we can help

I try and purchase whenever possible. It helps keep my favorite software projects alive. I don't think we should stop at just purchasing linux distros though. I purchase copies of FreeBSD, contribute money/support to different projects like apache and jboss, and try to fund the opensource/free software movement in any way possible. I've purchased Redhat 6.0 up to 7.1 (including RH 6.2 AXP), Debian 2.1, Mandrake 7.1, and FreeBSD 4.4-Release. I can't be the only one who's done that though <grin/>

Also keep in mind that the Distro likes mandy and RH are on the front line, they do A LOT of work promoting and working linux into areas that individuals cannot (corp. stuff, etc). Im not saying JUST make an effrot to support them, but becuase they are in such a high/powerful position we should support them cuase you have to admit, their marketing and small 5% apps made it a lot easier to install....

How much $ needed per month to keep this site up and running? Just curious.

Ben.

Ben.
Its not so much of that, it needs a new machine to run the site. Jeremy is trying to get contributions to help pay for a new machine for it.

bkeating,
I really appreciate the offer but the new server will need to be a server class machine. This site is starting to require quite a bit of power.

Ummm, are you sure it's not just the situation that YOU want a server class machine???

"Most users online 172"....this does not require a server class machine, i used to run a site with a similar amount of traffic.

Sure, you might need decent bandwidth and a decent hard drive for accounts, and message threads, but remember, 2 or so years ago, a 1ghz machine WAS server class, and bigger sites than this ran on less hardware than that back then, so exactly how do you NEED this?

I know people who have had sites with transfers in the high gb's/day without having their own server class mcahines...

Maybe you should stop freeloading from the linux community, this site is a hobby for you, and thats hows you should look on it. If its a career for you, then answer me this.

One of the mods for these forums expressed the opinion in this very thread that distro's just package and box other people's programs and dont really do anything for the linux comminuty. Well this site and others like it do even less so why do you deserver our support. linux forums are a dime a dozen.

i got a 233mhz w/ 128mb ram on a road runner (cable) connection and here are my stats www.teov.org/stats/ nice eh!?

I think i could get by with less... i think lq.org would need more bandwidth then anything else but i am not one to judge.

What is linuxquestions.org running for hardware?

ben.

You really do enjoy picking fights, don't you?

So, there may be many hundreds or even the odd thousand Linux forum, but you should ask yourself this, Sickboy, if they are all of equal value, why does this site have so many more subscribed and active users than most others? Sure there are some sites that have a huge number of members, but for a site that's only been running for a relatively short time, I feel that it is most certainly one of the best.

How can you accuse someone that gives something back to the community, even if it is only a place for the exchange of ideas and information, of freeloading?

You used to run a site with a similar amount of traffic to this one? What was the purpose of your site? What did it offer? More importantly, what happened? You get bored or did you become just plain lazy?

I got both bored and lazy. It was an antivirus/antitrojan site.

What i'm saying is when mods on this board even seem unwilling to pay for linux distros, and then ask for donations and turn down potential gig boxes, it seems a bit hypocritical and ungrateful.

Maybe im just wrong.

Maybe my initial post seemed a little harsher than it was meant to..
