Suggest me a distro
 

Not just any. I have spcificiations.

- Has to be stable.

- Does not require me to read a manual to install.

- 1 CD.

- Minimal and basic. In otherwords, whatever software I want in it, I would have to install it myself manually. Including X and the desktop environment.

So what choices do I have?

Please, do not repeat what has already been said. There is no need for more than one person telling me the same suggested distro.

There are plenty of threads in this forum about which distribution, and plenty of info on google and other search engines, you have included nothing to say you have alreayd tried researching yourself, so i will assume you are lazy.

Try ubuntu

Try CRUX - everything is pretty much a manual installation. You won't need to read the manual if you are good enough with Linux. If you aren't, you mind have to read a little.

if you only one 1 cd (not dvd if dvd fedora core) but 1 cd i would say centos. I used it and it is good. I dont know though if the x comes with the 1 cd version.

What is so demanding and impolite about being specific on my needs?

There are like over 200 distros out there. I am not about to burn and try all of them.

Listen--if you are the type that gets tire seeing the same old stuff asked over and over again. You could have just ignored this thread rather than be an anal over it by using the just-use-search or google-it attitude. Better yet, just ignore the whole forum entirely, because every possible question out there will be asked more than once.

I gave specifications, obviously, it was meant for someone who have experienced with a variety of distros to answer. Not some show-off "l33tster."

Okay, lets put the money where your mouth is: Find me a thread with someone else making the same 4 specifications ("stable, 1 CD, no manual, minimal") as I. Don't just give me the hits from the search. Click into the thread, read the OP's specification first, see if it matches mine, then post the result. Don't bother, there is none. But go ahead and try first, I would love to see you prove yourself wrong.

Do the same with Google. Type in the keywords I mentioned, and see if it will give you a solid respond. Here, copy and paste this into the search engine: "linux distro minimal 1 cd no manual stable" Let me know which link, and in which page is going to prove me wrong. Heck, you can even type in some BS like "lalalalala" and still get responded by over half a million sites.

So in conclusion, if you don't feel like helping out, just don't reply. Don't make yourself so anal over it by trashing the thread.

Actually,you do have a typical Windows user attitude ... arrogant, lazy, and uninquisitive. My suggestion would be that you pick any Linux distro and try it. I suspect you'll give upfairly quickly.

I have not come across one distro that does not require the reading of Manuals/Faqs/Help to resolve issues from install to configuration. If you're looking for something like that, you wont find it here.

People have responded with good suggestions which you have seemingly ignored (and not thatnked them for).

If you're scared of installing one you can try a Live CD like Knoppix, it's 1 CD, you can get away with no manual since you can't really do that much, stable? i prefer Arch for my stability but you'll need to read for that.

Asking questions is never bad, it leads to innovation and diversity, relying on others to find out something that you can research is lazy.

Why would anyone want to help if you demand help and then do not seem to appreciate it when you are offered it? I have followed a number of your threads and you seem to think that people in this forum owe you something as a newbie poster.

If you want to learn Linux, there is plenty of help here. But, no one here is going to be inclined to offer it if you find it impossible to be greatful for it.

2) PCLinuxOS 0.92

3) Vector Linux

4) Knoppix

Give them a try and see how you get on.


p.s. After using Windows, linux is different and you will find yourself asking questions, thats part of learning how to use it.
