Stupid question about Windows & Linux

I have Fedora Core 3 and Windows XP. And usually i restart both Windows and Linux without closing my applications, of course, i close any application where i must save something, you know... But since i installed Linux, sometimes it scans my Windows partition when i start windows... You know what i mean, that stupid message "Checking C: for errors". It was ok until today when it found some "lost clusters" or something like this in "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox" and i had to reinstall mozilla. The questions is: does that have any connection with linux? Because until i installed linux i have never had this kind of problem... Thank you.

Nothing you did in Linux most likely caused such errors or checks. And to be honest, you should always close all applications before shutting down, hence the reason you might have gotten that check, etc. When you have applications open, they have open files other than what you might be editing manually yourself on whatever application it might be.. simply shutting down your machine doesn't always mean your terminating your applications cleanly.

I usually see this when the PC was shut down by some method other than choosing shutdown or reboot.
How are you rebooting with your new dual boot?

I restart Windows choosing "shut down" option from start menu, and in linux i simply type "reboot" in terminal. I find it easier than choose Actions -> restart. Does it matter? It seems to me it's the same thing. Thank you.

For Windows.. just hitting the power button is ok for all I care..
For Linux.. start using shutdown -r now or shutdown -h now.. its more of a clean shutdown..

Do you have by any chance NTFS write support enabled in your FC3 install? And did you use it? I'm asking because NTFS partitions write support under Linux has some serious restrictions.

And...salutare clujeanule...eu sint iesean! (A greeting for my conational)

Thank you trickykid. You may be right, but what's the difference between these:
Code:
root /sbin> ls -l reboot poweroff shutdown
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root     4 May 22 21:47 poweroff -> halt
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root     4 May 22 21:47 reboot -> halt
-rwxr-xr-x  1 root root 18420 Oct  7  2004 shutdown
And for harken: i don't have any NTFS partition. I knew this before install linux and i converted all my partitions to FAT32.

Just one more question for trickykid or any moderator who will read this: are we allowed to write here in any other language than english? Because this is the second time when i found a conational in about 2 or 3 weeks since i first entered this site. Thank you.

Salutare si tie! (eu sunt din Braila, sunt student in Cluj ) (sorry i did this, but i had to respond to harken in our language, because he did this too...). Don't blame me please.
