Unhappy stuck compiling kernel: make modules_install

hello,

i tried to compile/install the kernel and i get stuck in some errors

i just want to change one line in one source file to make my serial usb connector work.

this is what i did (Fedora core 1):
(install source code)

cd /usr/src/linux-2.4
make oldconfig
make bzImage
make modules
make modules_install

that's it. i get errors like:

cp: cannot stat `ac.o': no such file or directory
cp: cannot stat `asus_acpi.o': no such file or directory
cp: cannot stat `battery.o': no such file or directory
cp: cannot stat `button.o': no such file or directory
cp: cannot stat `fan.o': no such file or directory
cp: cannot stat `processor.o': no such file or directory
cp: cannot stat `toshiba_acpi.o': no such file or directory
cp: cannot stat `thermal.o': no such file or directory

make[2]: *** [__modinst__] Error 1
two more errors.
...

try backing up the config file, and run :
make mrproper
in the directory ...
then replace the .config back into the source folder ...
then type :
make dep
after that is done, then type :
make clean

and then after that is done type :
make bzImage

you basically followed the steps to compiling a 2.6.x kernel ...
so see if doing the above steps helps you get by the error ...

make modules

...
make[3] ***[keyspan.o] Error 1

i get stuck on the file i changed. i read somewhere on the internet how to modify the line 536 of keyspan.h but it may not be for me. it must be a newer/diferent file. oh well.

could someone tell me the steps to apply this patch?
