what does it do. hard time understanding manual

removes debug information from executables and
libraries.

you can really mess up a bunch of files with strip. i think by default it removes a lot more stuff than debugging symbols. strip --strip-debug is pretty safe. --strip-unneeded is kinda safe. other than that, you'll mess up stuff. make backups of the files you want to try it on first. you'll crash your system if you try to strip the C libraries.
