strange problem with sound in earphones

hi,
i'm running ubuntu 7.04 on a hp laptop.I have a strange problem.Sound works fine through speakers.The problem comes when i plug in earphones.Then sound comes through earphones but simultaneously comes through speakers too!
Is this a driver problem?

Umm no. If your plugging the earphones into the soundcard, its normal, its supposed to output sound on all sound outputs. If the earphones are plugged into the speakers (which they should be), then its the speakers that have a problem.
