Strange graphics - off and on then scrambled

I've got an old computer with an Intel graphics card. I'm using the Intel graphics driver. When I "startx", all seems fine, then a few minutes later my screen goes off for a few seconds and comes back on. Any running applications are then "filled" with scrambled graphics (horizontal lines). A minimise/maximise fixes the issue but it reappears later (without the monitor going off).

Any ideas?

It's running Arch with LXDE; no configuration of X was done.

Thanks

Horizontal frequency is too high. So the monitor goes out of synch.

You will have to edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf -- to the best of my knowledge. I have not worked with arch linux so I am not sure if they have some simple commands like 'xorgconfigure' or 'xorgsetup' like Slackware has.
