I usually recommend to newbies, Mageia, Debian Stable or Ubuntu-Mate in this order. Though I have tried Ubuntu Unity, I haven't tried the Mate version but will one day. I do like Mate DE over most others.

Firstly the fact that a path to a program is different between Linux and Windows has nothing to do with Ubuntu in particular.

Another command to try is "which <executable-name>" and that will tell you the path from where the executable is run.

If you have follow-up questions on the command line, it's probably best to start a new thread versus hijack an existing discussion.

ping Mreff555 - It is difficult to comprehend what sort of admin you are and what you consider important beyond the name or appearances to others. Since you apparently like it and are more experienced in it, I don't understand why you didn't just keep Gentoo and learn more on how to minimize maintenance.

I don't understand why you call Slackware "bloated" just because it makes it easy (no work in most cases) to deal with dependencies 'cuz most is just there and the only cost is hard drive space. Those files only consume resources if and when you run them. Hard drive space is cheap and since you mentioned Time is of greater importance it seems a no=brainer to me and writing it off distinctly and wrongly prejudiced. FWIW I run Slack as my main and the only bad thing about maintenance is my skills suffer from lack of use LOL. It's quite simply trouble-free as I have it setup.

You liked Arch but dumped it because your hard drive developed bad sectors. That did NOT happen as a consequence of having installed Arch so why kick it to the curb for real?

Regarding Ubuntu, since they make Kubuntu which defaults to KDE and/or as you mentioned you can install whatever WM/DE you want so why bitch about Gnome? Admittedly I have never liked Gnome or it's derivatives on many levels but the solution is easy peasy - I don't use it. As for dependency resolving issues, zI don't like automated "upgrades/installations" either but it seems to me there are numerous switches possible and certain commands best avoided because of a bad benefit/risk relationship unless you really know what you're doing. Don't get me wrong I find Ubuntu quite annoying for several reasons (most of which assume I'm a moron) but it's user base is so huge I have to conclude that maintenance can likely be kept low just by becoming knowledgeable and adept with it's quirks.

I suppose your rant could be the cumulative result of many annoyances and perhaps even some downtime. You seem to have some decent solutions available to you, not just one, if you could get over defining yourself as a Gentoo User and put faults where they belong and not just blame the distro.

One of the first Linux distros i had was Ubuntu, most to learn Linux software and back then it was a good distro to start with Linux and learn a little bit about it.

Originally, I installed Slack specifically to learn those skills (since Slackware has a reputation for being very hands on) but everything just works. I think I'll have to break something to get the practice .

I recommend that people do a bunch of research and give them a few sites to look at. If I'm absolutely forced to make a recommendation then I would likely suggest Mint with Cinnamon.

Anyhow, as for Ubuntu, I'm using Lubuntu right now. I'm not big on fancy but I do like a little customization. It's light, does what I need, and is pretty well supported.
