Welcome to LQ.

By Linux do you mean the kernel or a specific distro?

You'll need to be a bit more precise and I can't really see anyone holding your hand all the way. Most modern distros are actually easier to install than windows.

I think that the Documentation at www.mysql.com is excellent.

I must claify myself. MySQL is not the problem. I have used it for a while on windows based machines. I have now loaded Redhat 7.3, and Mysql 4 and have tested it i.e. created tables ect. But I cannot get any of the windows machines to see the server. I think where I am comming unstuck is with the IP addresses.

A few things to check. Post the output of the following commands.

Is the server listening for connections:
ps -ef | grep mysql
netstat -nlp

Do you have any firewall rules in place:
iptables -L

I removed all firewalls & it is lisining. Now when I try to connect from the windows machine, it gives the following error:

ERROR 1130: Host '192.169.0.6' is not allowed to connect to this MySQL server.

This error occurs when I put the ip address of the server or the server name. I assume that I have to enable which IP addresses can access the server, but cannot find how.

Thanks,
Chris

PS 192.169.0.6 is the IP address of the windows machine

You will need to add a user and host to the mysql permissions - on the server login as root and run:
grant all on *.database to user@host identified by 'password';

This might seem like a stupid question, but if I want one user name to be used on mutiple hosts, do I have to add a user for each host (the host name being the IP address of the host). Or what else can I use as the host name?

Thanks
Chris

You can use "%" as a wildcard - see:
