Status of FUSESMB

I've just integrated FUSESMB into my linux installation, since the original GNOME VFS (browsing the network neighborhod) would not allow me to also play video files, unless they were mounted by a SMBMOUNT.

But after googling for FUSESMB I came across the author's site. Where I found that this project is apperantly abandoned since the links are broken and there's no mention of a working mailing list and also the latest version of the program is more than a year old.
Is this true and is there an alternative to this program?
