Startx fails with "fbcon not found" error - need help to fix this

I'm running Debian Squeeze on an Acer Aspire One ZG5 with an Intel i915 GPU. It was working just fine with a nicely set up and tricked out TWM based desktop. Well it stopped working after I booted up with a USB stick still plugged in and the netbook hung at the bios splashscreen. After that, startx fails to boot into the desktop with an error something like "fbcon not found". I have searched up and down the web for any solutions, but none of the remedies helped at all. I'm getting really frustrated with this especially since this is the only working computer I have at the moment and I need this to work properly to get some study work done over the weekend. Has anyone successfully solved this problem (without installing everything from scratch)? I need to get this to work a.s.a.p.!

Blind guess, try not to use a frame buffer console at all, e.g. boot with "vga=normal".

I that doesn't work, please attach a log with the error message in its context.

Are you 100% sure that there are not hardware problems with your notebook? If it was working and you didn't change anything at system's level, I beat that your hardware got broken. Once I had a similar problem and was caused by a broken led display.

Just my two cents.
