Starting multiple instances of X server

I know that with "startx -- :1" I can obtain a second (independent?) graphic session.

In my Fedora FC6 system, however, this command does not provide a graphical login manager with which to login as another user in the second session. Am I missing something?

Moreover, as a curiosity, I tried to input commands as "startx -- :3", "startx -- :5" and so on and the system seems to react in a strange way: sometimes it opens further sessions, other times the server crashes with various error messages. Also, sometimes the graphics environment are using terminals 7 and above, some other times they start from 8.

I'm sure there is a logical explanation, but my narrow knowledge does not supply it...
Can someone explain, please?

'startx' starts X server and whatever you've told it to do in your ~/.xinitrc file. If you want a graphical login manager, you'll have to start that instead; add it to ~/.xinitrc or just launch the manager, but setting the DISPLAY to something else than the existing one (which is usually :0.0)

Thanks a lot for this answer.
What about my second question?
