Starting Gnome quickly

Is there any way of starting Gnome quickly through the command line - and not through gdm?

I imagine something like startx -gnome would work - is that correct?

create a file called /home/you/.xinitrc and put the line "exec gnome-session" in it.

Thar's a bit of a hardcoded approach to it though. you should be able to set the default desktop when you run switchdesk, which uses a very similar approach using the .Xclients and .Xclients-default files. i just use .xinitrc, less farting around.

Well, either comment it out, or (download/create) a script that lets you choose which.

you might want to look at Xtart, which is a little script that runs in a console and just give you a choice of which desktop to load, a la gdm...
