So you have not set up key-based authentication for the second hop.

I think you need this, as password based authentication won't work, because your keyboard has been "left behind" (hope that makes some sort of sense!).

The hopping worked for me because I have (different) key-based authentication both from k3 to k4 and k4 back to k3.

Both errors seem to refer to the same thing: the failure to use or allocate a (pseudo-)terminal.

Please try the double in 2 steps. First ssh to the first machine, thus allocating a terminal (ie a window with a shell), then try the hop to the second one.

I'm no expert in terminal configuration, but I'm guessing that the second machine doesn't allow you to open a terminal on it. Maybe you can take a look at the "xhost" command (ie do an "xhost +" on the 2nd machine). But please note that you disable a security measure by doing so.
