ssh doesnt work for my ubuntu

I installed ubuntu 6.10 in my machine.
i tried to ssh my own system (as root)
but it says:
ssh: connect to host 192.168.100.85 port 22: Connection refused

n thats my IP. i changed my ip and tried. but no effect.
I can log onto other linux machines based on 'etch' using ssh.
But they cannot log on to my machine the same way...

Have you tried "nmap 192.168.100.85" from a remote machine to your machine?

It sounds like a firewall might be blocking access to port 22.
Maybe you can post your iptables configuration?

Are the other computers on the same, internal network segment (192.168.x.x addresses are internal only, never directly accessible from outside/internet)?

Also, you may want to check if your sshd (ssh daemon) is running and configured properly.

Make sure you installed the ssh server, 'apt-get install open-sshd' from memory

Try also 'ssh localhost', to check its allowing local connections and not a firewall issue.

It is common to disallow ssh root logins. It would be better to log in as a regular user and use sudo.
The config file /etc/ssh/sshd_config may have root logins disabled.

ssh worked atlast

first thanks to all replys...
I dont exactly know how did 'ssh' it work...

But i tried nmap from remote machine. But the command was 'not found'.
I also tried 'sshd', but again the command was not found...

'ssh' was previously installed in my machine. it was 'ssh-askpass-gnome'.
There was 'ssh' also in synaptic package manager. I installed that. and it started working.

i dont know the reasons, but can anyone explain to me..

'sshd' must be running on the machine that you're trying to reach with ssh.
nmap may not be installed or you could try "locate nmap" or "whereis nmap" to find it.

'ssh-askpass-gnome' alone is probably not sufficient. I guess you'll need a fully installed ssh client,
which you now have installed using Synaptic.
'ssh-askpass-gnome', as the name suggests, is probably a small tool for asking the ssh password through a Gnome dialog box or something like that.
