to see if it runs and listens on port 143.

Thnx - imap is not running for some reason - it did not bring anything...where can i install the easiest way?
First check if you have already installed one of the most common imap servers for linux (dovecot, cyrus, courier) and all you need to do is just to start it. Or else use your package manager to install it.
Then you have to configure squirrelmail to use that particular imap server.
