Question splitting up the passwd and shadow files

suppose you want to split these files into smaller ones to manage easier. Is this possible? Is it wise?

No, you cannot do this. Nor would you want to.

How large is your file that you would even need to consider this? 50,000 users? And how much time do you spend editing it? Can't be that much.
