speeding up X windows
Hey,
Yesterday I tried to run X windows on RH7.2 and it runs very slow because the machine im running on is something like a 100 Mhz and i think only 16 meg of ram. I don't need to run x windows on the machine but I do like to have there to use from time to time. So I want to know if there is anything I can do make it run faster? is there stuff I can cut out or change. I've got both KDE and Gnome installed (from the rh7.2 install). Which one is the fastest? or should I switch to a different shell, I dont need any fancy stuff. Any ideas to get it running faster would be great. Thanks Tristan |
Try using Blackbox as your window manager. A new version (0.62.0) was released today. After you've installed it, you'll need to edit/create the ".xinitrc" file in your home directory and add the line "exec blackbox" to the file.

My install of 7.1 was pretty slow. I just got my dual boot with my main system (1ghz, 512MB DDR) setup today and damn RH is fast. You should think about a dual boot.

BlackBox Rox
Thanks Spec
BlockBox is lightning fast. Just what I needed |
you can also check out www.xfce.org , another desktop which is small and very fast.. probably work well on a 100mhz machine as well.

ewww xfce.... hehe i already won one battle about that!
there's also fluxbox, which is slightly modified version of blackbox, which just goes a little further to make it more usable, like including full hjoteky supprt and such like, otehr than that it's totally identical |

ice windoe manage is also very good, and even has a little "start" button, but it says linux ;)

WindowMaker is good, but it is pushing it for a 100mhz system. Blackbox is IMO the fastest of em all.
