specific source code and RPM for distro

I'm a RHnewbie. I seem to be doing well so far, but i was wondering if when i'm looking to download and install new programs, do i need to look for source code and rpm's specifically for RH9?
i'm somewhat sure that the rpm's have to be specific to my distro but does the source code need to be as well?

Source code generally does not. Occasionally (only once I can think of) have I seen source tailored to a distro, and I don't think it was necessary since I cannot even remember the situation :D

RPM's, depending on how important to system integrity, may be able to 'not' be specific either. However, for the most part, it is best to not try to install those that are not made for your system, or aren't generic. Generic RPM's usually work fine though, if the developer doesn't make official RPM's for your distro.

Cool
