Soundcard is being blocked by some application.

In MD8.1 after configuring the sound card through sndconfig it works fine but later I get the following error:

Please check that:

1. You have the correct output pluging selected (I have)
2. No other program is blocking the sound card (How do I check?)
3. Your sound card is configured properly. (It is)

When playing Xmms after a while I get an audable beep then the music stops and on restarting the music file the error occurs. If I get the beep I can either wait a while or use arts control > arts status > suspend now and continue playing, but.

If I get no audible beep say after closing Xmms then starting it again I get the error which cannot be cleared using suspend now

The only way to get sound back is to re-configure the sound card using
sndconfig

Everything works fine until something interferes with the soundcard.

Any ideas?

This is only from my experience, so it may not work for you, BUT, I couldn't get my soundcard to work at all (even though it was recognized) until I disabled PNP OS Installed in the BIOS. Linux doesn't like that in alot of ways. It's an easy fix if that's what's interfering. Something to try...

which sound driver is being blocked? my md80 xmms defaults to esd rather than arts, try changing the driver if youve not already.

Taz.Devil

Altough I don't think so i'll give a try for i'm getting problems from MD8.1 that I haven't had previously or have been able to fix in the past in other versions.

I don't know? a few day's ago I opened the terminal and started esd which fixed it but it only worked once so I would say it was a fluke.

How do I actually change the drivers?

its in xmms

you can change what outpout plugin you use in xmms. go to options -> preferences at the bottom of the first section is the output plugin to use.

im not sure if this is the correct thing but hey,

Alex

I've tried that webtoe but this is what I get:

Default Xmms Driver:
OSS Driver 1.2.5 which gives the error.
When this driver works all controls work as also responce time is almost instant.

Change Xmms Driver To:
arts driver 0.4
1. loss of volume control on Xmms, I can only control the volume through aumix.
2. slow responce time approx 6 seconds between songs.

do you not have the optino to use esd?

Not in Xmms I don't. The only two Output Plugins available for Xmms are OSS and aRts plugins.

Sorry I should have added that yes esd is in my system but the docs don't say what to do with it nor how to check if its running or wheather it should be started on boot so I don't know how to play with it to check.

Managed to fix it!.

Ok, the problem with the OSS driver that seems to get installed as default with
my version of MD8.1 just has conflicts that I am unable to resolve.

As in the above posts on changing over to the aRts driver the problem was
solved but it caused me to loose volume control through Xmms as response time now also being slow. To rectify,
once changing over to the aRts driver on Xmms logout and logging as root,
re-reconfigure the sound card using 'sndconfig' without changing any settings
at least in my case anyway. Log back in and test it. It seems that on
reconfiguring the sound it accepts the arts driver (joins the aRts driver with
Aumix). Volume control is restored to Xmms! unfortunately response time is still
slow, but hey I have control!

If anybody knows what actually happens i.e; reconfiguring the soundcard makes
Xmms link to Aumix and can explain it in laymans terms please do for I would
love to know how it comes together.
