Sound queueing problem

I just did a new install of Mandrake 9.2 over my old Redhat 9 and I am trying to get the sound working correctly, I've always used KDE for both distros and when I had redhat it seemed to be set up by default that I could hear gaim's notification chimes even when I was listening to music. Now, however, when I listen to music as I talk on gaim, I get no sound, but when I close Totem/XMMS/mplayer (I've tried this with all of them) every single one of the sounds that were queued to play start playing in sequence. Is there some way to set up the sound so that it works the way I am used to? or at least set it up so that if I am listening to music the queued sounds will go away instead of being played when the program ends?

I also figured out that the same problem will occur when I use IMs with programs other than media players (if I send some IMs while playing a game with sounds, the sounds queue up in the same way). I switched the sound output on gaim from automatic to ESD, and now I can hear sounds while playing music in XMMS as opposed to the sounds queueing up, however, for Totem, mplayer, and my sound based games I still have no way to hear my IM noises.
