Sound problem in linux

I have installed Fedora 8 on my Laptop. I do use head phones. At first I don't have any problem, but suddenly sound is coming out of my box though I connected head phone. The problem is solved sometimes when I reset audio configuration files and reload audio drivers. But it is not working every time. I have to listen to the lectures in the class, so it is very difficult for me. Please give the instructions what to do?

When I have no problem, I can find one extra option (Master) in Volume Control. If I have the problem that is not visible.

Here is the drivers details.

Vendor: Intel Corporation
Model: 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller
Module: snd-hda-intel
PCM device: ALC268 Analog
ALSA Driver Version: Driver Version 1.0.15
ALSA Lib pacakge(s): alsa-lib-1.0.16-3.fc8
ALSA Utils package(s): alsa-utils-1.0.16-3.fc8

I observed one more thing regarding version. If the version is 1.0.16 then it if working properly if it is 1.0.15 gives the problem. How to update this driver to 1.0.16 version. (I think this may be the problem).

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Sorry I dont have an answer for you but I am puzzled too, because those kind of connections have always been mechanical! I mean you push a headphone plug into the jack and inside of a jack there is a small spring-loaded connector that disconnects the main speaker and gives the signal to your headphones.
I have never heard of soft switch for headphones?!
I know in Vista it is a very annoying feature that (tries to) detect the kind of plug inserted in the jack but I think that is more of a problem than a solution. Specially if you have yellow and black jacks on your sound card!
If Linux does that too,(Auto Detecting) they need to STOP!

BTW have you tried to change the properties on your jacks via the software? (ie set to stereo instead of 5 chan. dolby etc.?).
Like the Switches and Options tabs next to the Playback? (I got an onboard SiS sound card SI7012 (Alsa mixer)on my desktop)
