get oss:

http://www.opensound.com/download.cgi

this a tar ball - extract it using this:

tar -zxvf filename.tar.gz

read the INSTALL file and follow the steps. worked fine with my VIA sound (AC97 based also) that is onboard a P4VMM2 motherboard.

The installaton is pretty neat (and easy to follow). It'll load the modules and do a test for you.

another thing you might try is to make sure the PnP BIOS is disabled, I had to turn mine offf to Get my Creative SB Live! to work
