Sound only works in XMMS and Mplayer

Sound works perfectly in XMMS and Mplayer, but it doesn't work properly in any other program.
I'm in Mandrake 9.0 and using alsa.

doesnot work properly
first you have to tell what this properly means
maybe becoz of esd/arts (that's my guess)

In what other programs?

I had the same problem. It is most likely the arts sound server that is causing the problem. For GUI fix, go into start/configuration/kde/sound/sound server and turn off the start aRts soundserver on KDE set-up and you should be all set.

After rch mentioned arts, I thought of course that must be it so I went in to turn it off and found that I already had it disabled. I turned it on to see if that would make it work and xmms and mplayer do not work now.

Programs such noatun, and some random games I have downloaded either make terrible screeching sounds or have sound that is intermixed with the screeching sounds. I think the games use sdl for sound.

mplayer -ao help will give you the possible audio output plugins that is in working condition in your system
see if it includes sdl
for a more easier way
