Sound/Multiple sounds under Linux
What's the deal with sound under Linux? I have Alsa set up and all, but I can only have one app playing sound at once. I know there are sound servers under gnome and KDE which allow 2 sounds at once for /certain apps/, but that's no good for me - I need ALL apps to have this function. For example, it's very annoying to have XMMS playing, and then see Mozilla freeze because it's landed on a site with Flash content which asks to use the soundcard.
I don't know about alsa - use oss.Everything is clicking and flashing and playing mp.3's there at the same time - no problem.
Pls. note that I just have a regular setup for sound - nothing fancy.
I am using oss drivers, and can not see anything that is written above by you crashmeister
IMHO the best way out is to recompile kernel including your soundcard support

Can't call Linux multitasker??? It's the KING of multitasking! Try doing more than 3 heavy things in winbloze and unless you have the INIAC, you will be rebooting in no time.
Anyway, I believe your problem might be your sound card abilities. Like crashmeister said, OSS might work a bit better for you on doing that. My SBLive by default works just fine doing multiple sound tasks. I believe what you have is "half duplex". See definitions here: http://foldoc.linuxguruz.org/foldoc.php?half-duplex
The problem is, I don't know how to enable "full duplex" for you. But at least it gives you somewhere to go, and something to search on.

Nope, my sound card is a 6 channel full-duplex (I think that refers to whether you can record and play at the same time, though), and plays multiple sounds just fine when I used to use it under Winblows & with crappy KDE's crappy ARTS thingy. Thanks for the suggestion though. I'm now downloading OSS to see if I have the same luck as crashmeister.

UPDATE: YAY! OSS worked! THANK YOU, crashmeister.

Oh sorry dude for the mis-interpretation... So you were joking then...
You are very welcome.
Actually I might try to install alsa one of these days on one of my play-and-break partitions (if I get reeaaally bored).
I don't really know what this animal is supposed to do that oss doesn't.I think some soundediting app's need it - have to read up on that one.
