modprobe snd-intel8x0
amixer set Master 100 unmute
amixer set PCM 100 unmute
amixer set Headphone 100 unmute

i type modprobe snd-intel8x0 and it says:

modprobe: Can't locate module snd-intel8x0

snd-intel8x0 should have been copied to
/lib/modules/your kernel-version/kernel/sound/pci

mine is here
/lib/modules/2.4.20/kernel/sound/pci/snd-intel8x0.o

if u don't see it, u missed something in installation..

read INSTALLATION and try it again
did u do 'make install' ?

that's weird..

i have slack pkg created by checkinstall that says the file has been copied to the directory (/lib/modules..../)
when i did make install

try
make install > mkinstall_log
grep snd-intel8x0 mkinstall_log

see if u see it's being copied
