I am using SuSE 9.3 Prof. Sound was working fine for all applications until it just QUIT. Now it won't work for any applications. Alsa mixer shows all set properly, not muted, volume OK. The only thing that changed (or might have affected system) was I used YaST2's online update just before sound quitting. That's all I can think of. Now nothing has sound: no CD, no DVD, no sound in online multimedia, no sound no how.

Where do I even start to look???

Did your update happen to update the kernel by chance? What else was updated during this update, packages that is?

No, kernel was not changed. Update was a security update for 1 package (can't remember which one, but it was NOT sound-related).
