Sound Gets Blocked

Occasionaly after running certain programs my sound becomes blocked. If I try to run XMMS it says another program is blocking the sound. A quick scan of 'top' shows nothing obvious. This seems to happen frequently espescially after playing games.

Is their any way to clear the sound without rebooting?

You should try to use a sound server and use that to output all sound. This way the soundcard doesn't get hogged by a single application. Two common sound servers are (among others) esound and arts.

I don't have the answer to your question, but out of curiousity; what sound card are you using? I have had a similar problem using the integrated nForce sound on my mobo. It won't play sounds from more than one app at a time.

I hope to have this solved however. I ordered my long awaited Audigy last night , and supposedly it supports a ton of apps sound output at one time.
