I really want CD-R/W burning ability, DVD+ is least priority.

I've got the Sony DRU-500AX, and it works just fine. Nothing special. I've run it on RedHat 9, Debian (Woody to Sid), and now Slack 9.1 - no problems with any. I haven't tried to burn a DVD yet, not even in the other OS. I burn CD's and CD-RW's all from command line.
My present kernel is 2.4.23 and I'm just using SCSI generic support. Anything else you need to know, just ask.
