Some programs don't work after updating the kernel via up2date

Hi there,

I'm using Red Hat 8.0 and I'm quite happy with it. I have a question regarding the kernel updates via up2date.

When the updates are available, I download and install them as usual. I've noticed that some components no longer work with the new kernel. For example, I have VMware installed and when I use the new kernel (2.4.18.-18) it doesn't work anymore. But when I use the original kernel in which I installed this software, it runs without problems. Similar things happen with other packages.

The question is: Is there something that I have to do after I install a new kernel via up2date? Do I have to recompile my packages to suit the new kernel (this option sucks...)? Am I missing something?

Thanks for your help.

Cheers.

Anything that has a kernel module needs to be build or installed against the running kernel, try reinstalling vmware.

When you compile a sound Module for example for a special Kernel, and you make an Update of your Kernel, then you must recompile them, because they only work with the old Kernel. I think it's probably the same with you Programms. So i think you have to recompile the programmst that don't run, alternatively install the rpms (vmware etc.) again.
