Software RAID & Installation Problems

Greetings, this may be a software or hardware problem, so I wasn't sure which forum to post in.

I have a server using an Intel 845 board and two 40GB Maxtor IDE HDs. I need to run the drives in software RAID 1. I'm installing Mandrake 9. So far I've just used the installer to set up the partitions for software RAID, and it appears to work fine. Here's some info on my RAID partitions.

md0 /boot
md2 /tmp
md3 /
md4 /usr
md5 /var
md6 /home

I use mostly the default settings during installation after this point. When I boot from the HDs, I get the following... um... message I suppose...

L 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99

The "99"s continue for a few more lines. It looks like LILO is trying to start, but fails?

If I boot from a floppy disk, I get the following error:

Mounting /proc filesystem
Creating root device
Mounting root filesystem
EXT2-fs: unable to read superblock
mount: error 22 mounting ext2 flags Mounted devfs on /dev
Freeing unused kernel memory: 136K freed
Kernel panic: No init found. Try passing init= option to kernel.

The same errors occur if I use EXT3 as a filesystem as well. I'd consider myself a novice in linux, but I have no clue what to do here, any help is greatly appreciated!

Nobody has run across this error before? Any suggestions at all?
