Software load balancer recommendation ?

Hi can anyone recommend a good free / open source software load balancer for Linux or Windows. I'd like to see how it all works with some apps.

I want to run it in a Virtual environment, not sure with OS as yet, but can be either Linux or Win

We started using HAProxy with our container rollout over a year ago. Most of the config was done by others so I can't say much about it. It works well enough that there is talk of eliminating our BigIP F5 load balance appliances to use this instead.
