Smbmount Error In Mounting Windows XP Share

I just recently replaced my motherboard in my windows box from an abit an8 (crap) to a asus a8n. I reformatted owing to the fact that windows go insane when you don't.

I also have an ubuntu server which I use as a FTP. In order to put my music on the ftp so I can access it from elsewhere I use smbmount and share my Music folder in windows XP.

It used to work regardless of my user name, I have looked up this topic and all the advice I hear is 'Is guest on, and do you have the same user and password on both machines?'. Well yes I have. I tried everything. Before this reformat I did not have the same and it worked flawlessly.

I can ping the computer with the music on it. However if I do smbmount I get:

admin@hephaestus:~$ sudo smbmount //192.168.2.201/Music ./Music
Password:
Password:
11592: session setup failed: ERRDOS - ERRnoaccess (Access denied.)
SMB connection failed

Previously, due to the fact that I have no password on my XP account anything would work for the second samba password. I did add one and try it and it still doesn't work. I did add a new account of the same name and it doesn't work. I did turn on the guest account and it doesn't work.

The server is ubuntu linux. To get smbmount I did 'sudo apt-get install smbfs'

What did I do wrong?

Cheers,

To be sure that I understand you correctly, let me know if the following is accurate :

You've reinstalled windose on one PC, have not changed anything on your Ubuntu Linux server, & now when you use the exact command that you used before your windose reinstall to try & mount a share on your windose box it won't work!?!

If the above is correct then the problem is with your windose box.

I know the following is mere basics but it will give us a starting point. Please post an answer to them all :

Can you ping your windose box from your Linux box & vise-versa?
Are you sure that the Music directory is shared in windose?
Do you have windose setup as a multi-user system? (which means: What are the settings in "Control Panel - ?User Accounts? - ?Change the way users log on & off?" Is "Use the Welcome Screen" checked? (I think this is what their called!?!))
Do you have any of windose Service Packs installed? If so, check the firewall is disabled.
Is windose "Workgroup Name" set to the same name as in your smb.conf file in Linux?
Can you login to your Linux FTP server from your windose box?
What version of Samba are you running?

You could also try using mount to mount the windose share & post the resulting error & what dmesg has to say. The command will be something like :

Code:
mount -t smbfs //192.168.2.201/Music ./Music
That will do for now. Since the problem will be with your windose box finding the issue will take a bit of deciphering as you can't simply post a config file!

Post me back when you have checked all this.

P.S... Sorry if this is all basic stuff that you have already double checked but I need to know that you know!

Yes.

Yes.

Yes.

Yes, SP2, firewall is disabled.

Is windose "Workgroup Name" set to the same name as in your smb.conf file in Linux?
Yes.

Can you login to your Linux FTP server from your windose box?
Yes.

What version of Samba are you running?
How can I tell? I only have the latest that apt-get install smbfs gave me, with ubuntu, so I really don't know.

I ran the command you said as root and as a user and it gave the the same error.

paul@hephaestus:~$ sudo mount -t smbfs //192.168.2.201/Music ./Music
Password:
9861: session setup failed: ERRDOS - ERRnoaccess (Access denied.)
SMB connection failed

Paul is the user on my main computer aswell.

dmesg reveals aLOT of info.
