Smallest installable linux base distro (floppy?)

Just out of curiosity: Which would be the smallest linux distros that can be installed onto a pc and used as a base for a custom linux desktop system, and also provides a useable package management system and reasonable repositories? Any single floppy distros are welcome as well.

The only actively maintained one I can think of would be OpenWRT, which can run on standard x86 hardware. A base image there would be around 2 - 3 MB. I can't think of any other modern Linux system (I.E. one that isn't running ancient software like Linux 2.4.x) that could get down to that size.

hmmm... is microcore good enough for a base environment or would I have to install a whole lot of extra libs and tools to get a reasonably useable base from it? I would like to do a really lightweight (or flyweight) setup using alsa (or any lighter alternative), directfb or any other working, lightweight alternative to Xorg (fbui perhaps?), vtwm or ctwm, some lightweight panel and a small selection of apps.
