I've recently come across an interesting and convincing article about iPod connection to Suse that also covers the usb speed problem. Being a Suse 10 user (even though without iPod) I followed the instructions to speed up the USB transfer by adding a file that instructs Suse to mount without the sync option as mentioned in this thread before. For me too this solved the speed problem.
Just to give my testimonial here and emphasize the (semi)solution: I got better results when mounting the pendrive with the "async" option, like mentioned here, but the write speed is still lower than I expected. This is, now notably, an hardware limitation, since the vendor of my device isn't that good.
