Question Slooooow KDE for a newbie

I'm reasonably new to Linux. I know Windows inside-out and I am very familiar with the command prompt under it. However, I prefer to learn new OS's through a GUI if possible.

My problem is, I was fiddling in KDE on RH7.1 last night, and now everything is extremely slow. It was fine before then. I haven't tried much through the basic command line, but as soon as I startx, everything takes forever to start up; once it's running, it's fine. Even apps in KDE take forever to load.

I am comfortable editing files, just as long as I get a fairly complete explanation of what to do.

TIA
